Cascade Head is a headland that encompasses three different trail heads linking you to overlooks, cliffs, ocean views and even a place to view seals. There are three trailheads in this park, in which two of them are closed from January to mid July due to protection of wildife, the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly. This butterfly is endangered and the two trails are closed six months out of the year to protect them.

The trail that is open all year is the lower Natural Conservancy trailhead. You can find this TH(trailhead) easily by putting Cascade Head, Oregon into your GPS and this will bring you right to the parking lot.

The trail going out to the coast

It is off the 101, north of Lincoln City. If driving North, turn Left onto Three Rocks Road. Stay on this main road until you see the parking lot on the left. If your driving south on the 101, it is south of Neskowin and you will turn right on Three Rocks Road. Stay on the main drag until you see the parking lot on the left hand side.

Trail Descriptions:

This hike is moderate. Its a 4.2 mile hike, RT (roundtrip). The trail starts off following the road, but there is a trail on the side. There are good signs until you find the actual trailhead where it starts. It gains a bit of elevation but the hike should only take a few hours. The overlook is worth it, especially on a nice sunny day.

When the upper TH is open, one of the trails that is closed from January to Mid July, is only a one mile to the overlook. These two trails bring you to the same overlook (it’s a beautiful view!) But it’s hard to go on a day without clouds. This place is a very foggy site. I got very lucky coming to this destination on a warm sunny day.

The other hike, Harts Cove is a moderate 5.4 mile trail RT where you can view the seals. Unfortunately, I went when the trail was closed so I could not go to this area. If you go, let me know how it is. I would love to find out 🙂
