Birmingham Alabama in my opinion, is a nice smaller sized city that reminds me of the small city I am from. Birmingham offers many diverse things to do all from expensive to free and with out even trying, I found six free things to do. So, if you’re on a tight budge, you can still enjoy your time there! You don’t have to spend a bunch of money to have a good time and all of the activities I found were in a pretty close proximity of each other.
The Color Tunnel is one of those things. Apparently, this is starting to get a lot of recognition on Tumblr, but I had no idea it existed until I came here. It is located right in downtown Birmingham and it is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a tunnel with lights that you can either drive or walk through. It reminded me of a fun house. Make sure you go at night when it’s the best to see!
You can see a replica of the Statue of Liberty here. It is one-fifth of the size and is located in Liberty Park. Not much to do there except to look at the Statue of Liberty, but it’s free!
Red Mountain Park is a great place to go during the day for hiking and also to catch the sunset over Birmingham. This is not funded by the government or the state, but rather the people. I felt very safe, it was extremely clean and just a great small park to enjoy for a few hours.
Railroad Park is great for day and night as well. It is a small county park that features nice walkways, a beautiful pond, ice-skating in the winter, events all year-round, and at night, you have a picturesque view of the city night lights! Very beautiful!
The Botanical Gardens are beautiful of course, and free! The Botanical Garden near my home-town use to be free when I was a kid, and then they started to charge admission. It’s nice to see the admission hasn’t changed everywhere else!
You can also do a river walk called the Cahaba River walk. It’s pretty and relaxing. A great place to go to hear the sounds of nature.
If you know of any others, feel free to write them in the comments below!
