Malibu is a very popular beach, just like Venice Beach, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica. Definitely enjoyable, especially watching the surfers, that’s what I like to do, but there are also places to visit in and around Malibu.
Malibu has a National Recreation Area called Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a State Park called Malibu Creek State Park and just north of Malibu, offers another State Park, Mugu, some sand dunes, and right along the Highway 1 lies a spectacular beach that has no name to it, yet super quaint and beautiful! Especially if you want to get away from the crowds and be able to park right where the beach lies, even mid-day! Say what!!!!!! 😉
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area:
This park offers plentiful hiking for day-hikers and gives you views of the ocean, the canyon the park runs through, an oasis type of environment, and it takes you through houses that use to be in the area that got burned down by a fire, but still has it’s remnants remaining to explore, if you shall choose.
I will say this though, only because I was disappointed. The park map shows a waterfall on the trail, which I was very excited to check out. Unless I blatantly missed the real one, the falls were very very tiny. I mean were talking a foot. So as long as your not stoked on seeing falls, then you’re good. It does however offer an oasis environment in the middle of the desert and that’s cool.
If you do the entire trail, it brings you closer to the ocean offering spectacular views. I did not travel the whole way. Very very hot when I decided to go, but the pictures on google images look breathtaking, especially sunset!
Driving through Malibu, or more behind it.
Just driving through the roads in Malibu offers great scenery! The roads are very hilly and you drive through the rich houses with amazing views of the scenery and ocean.
It is very quiet there and is cool to just drive around in and check out. There are hiking trails in this area too, but for me it was difficult to find. And once you pass this one area, you lose reception. Do your research first if you want to hike in the area!
Malibu State Creek Park:
I did not get a chance to hike there, but a friend of mine said it was a good place to go for climbing and hiking. It costs money though, but not much. It was like ten dollars. Or you can just go to the park before the officials get there and you can get in for free! :0
No named beach right north of Malibu:
I have a picture that shows you exactly where I was. This beach was a family beach for sure.
You felt safe there. It was very calm and collective. If you want to go somewhere and party and drink with your friends, this place probably isn’t the ticket.
It is a beach because there is parking and a staircase that will lead you to the beach, but I did not see a sign anywhere stating where I was.
I very much enjoyed this beach. It was nice to get away from the crowds and to be able to just park right at the beach. It was right off the 1, you just park right along the side of the road, there is parking, free parking.
Point Mugu State Park:
Very excellent hiking destination. The state park is at the beach and across the road, highway 1, to a campground and there are hiking trails all around there. You can hike up a canyon, right along the coast, hike trails that give you a view of the coast and I’m assuming more.
The park offers a very extensive hiking system with lots to explore! I only spent a few hours there, but what I saw of it was cool. I hiked the scenic trail that gave you views of the coast, because I am obsessed with the coast.
These are the spots I ran into around the Malibu area. If you find more, let me know. I love to check out new spots!!! 🙂 Thank you for reading and hope you have a wonderful day. And remember, never stop exploring!!!
Sincerely, Shelly/Livingonthedirt
